Amy's Peter Pan Birthday Cake

Earlier I caught up on a long overdue post, about Amy's birthday party. Now I'm doing the same for her cake! I'm actually planning to post about all the cakes I've made so far this year, but I figured this cake deserved a post of its own.

I'm not going to lie, it was a hell of a headache. For some insane reason I decided it would be three tiers, covered in white icing and have black Peter Pan silhouette shapes over it. After lots of research (and knowing I wasn't too creative) I decided one of the cheapest and easiest ways to do the silhouette shapes was to have them printed onto rice/edible paper.

It took a while to find all of the images but once I had them, I compiled them into one image and put it onto A4. I then found somewhere that would print it for me and it arrived within a few day. After that it was a case of making all three layers of cake and covering them with icing. I have to admit I'm not too good at the covering in icing yet, but I do learn a few more tips every time!

In the end I was left with a three layer cake, not too badly covered in icing, then a rice paper disaster! I'll not get into it, but lets just say the cake didn't look quite how it was supposed to. That said, you live and learn and at the end of the day, Amy was pleased with it and that's all that matters. The topper I ordered specially, from Ebay and I let Amy keep as a memento of the cake (since she didn't even want to eat it, in order to keep it!).

The bottom layer was strawberry and I was so happy with the way it cut and the layers. Chris had bought me a cake leveler just before and it really paid off! The middle section was chocolate and the top was lemon. Amy was only able to take one layer home with her and she picked chocolate. That said, the strawberry and lemon soon disappeared at this end too!

I definitely learnt a lot making this cake, but it will also be a while before I tackle two or more layers. It's just so time consuming to make all the cakes, sandwich them together nicely, buttercream them and then cover! Watch this space for more crazy cake making though!
