Source
Anyone with a love of our country will know just how much there is to explore. England has a wealth of culture, history and entertainment begging to be discovered, and the summer months are a perfect time to do just that. Take a look at these top historic cities for you to enjoy, and transport yourself back in time with the help of the various castles, architecture and museums that can be found. Once you have chosen your destination, be sure to check out the get up and go guide from Travelodge for itinerary inspiration, and make a mini-break out of your adventure!

Chester

Once upon a time Chester was a Roman fortress, and a visit to this beautiful city will still take you back to when the Roman Empire was rife. The amphitheatre is still there, as is the Roman wall. Some of The Rows date back to the Middle Ages, too.

Warwick

A visit to Warwick wouldn’t be complete without a trip to its iconic castle. It’s one of the finest examples of a castle in the entire country, and runs various events throughout the year. This attraction is far more than just a castle, catapulting visitors back in time with the help of re-enactments, fun attractions and entertainment.

York

With a wealth of attractions on offer which will introduce you to the various facades that York’s history possesses, the city of York is a must. York Minster is a beautiful, gothic basilica that will leave you mesmerised, while the Jorvik Viking Centre helps to tell visitors all about York’s Viking past. Bursting with culture, it’s a must for people who wish to explore our country’s history a little more. Plus, a wander down The Shambles is highly recommended, for the medieval shops that the cobbled lanes hold.

Bristol

Jam packed with Grade I listed buildings, Bristol has oodles of charm that is a magnet for visitors from far and wide. Fusing old and new perfectly, it’s a fascinating city that is as much about its modern flair as it is its ancient history. Check out the Bristol Museum, or go in search of some original Banksy – after all, this city is his home.

Stratford-upon-Avon

As the birthplace of the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, it’s understandable that this city is brimming with tourists. Head to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and catch one of his famous plays, or wander past his birthplace, or the birthplace of his wife, Anne Hathaway, to add a Shakespearian slant to your break.

Bath

Its Roman Baths are still used today, with the Thermal Spa being a particular highlight. The Georgian architecture and quaint little lanes also contribute to this stunning city – making it one which continues to burst with olde worlde charm and beauty.

It’s natural to think of the major cities, such as London and Manchester, when considering a weekend or mini-break. However, England has so much more to offer – it’d be a shame to miss it. Book a room in a Travelodge and get up and go explore historical England!
